SUMMARY:America 250: Common Threads
DESCRIPTION:In 2026\, the United States will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. America 250: Common Threads will both commemorate the events of 1776 and reflect on 250 years of American art and civic participation. An early engraving of the Declaration of Independence will anchor a group of historic documents displayed alongside textiles\, paintings\, toys\, and other works from 1776 to the present. The exhibition considers how artists and national leaders document American history. America 250: Common Threads explores how American artists historically foster civic participation and strengthen community relationships.   \nVisitors will experience how people have celebrated national and personal moments in history\, from a display of hundreds of 20th century patriotic snapshots to souvenirs collected from America’s Centennial in 1876. The exhibition explores the symbols artists turn to when celebrating or commenting on the United States: George Washington’s many faces\, eagles appearing across books\, baskets\, and coverlets\, flags seen as quilts or as documentation of the moon landing\, and more. Contemporary artists featured in the exhibition\, such as Robert Colescott\, Kay WalkingStick\, and Howard Finster\, continue to revisit national symbols and explore their resonance.   \n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition will also feature live quilting\, as local quilters and quilting guilds work in the galleries to piece quilt squares made by K-12 students across Arkansas and designed by artist Basil Kincaid.

SUMMARY:Hillbillies Everywhere: The Evolution of the Ozarker Image
DESCRIPTION:The Ozarks is a place often described by outsiders as full of hillbillies\, moonshiners\, regressive\, insular\, and worse. But how have Ozarkers thought about themselves over the years? How did the Ozarks come to be defined in these ways? And what are these assumptive descriptions really saying in the age of Walmart and Netflix? Join historian Jared Phillips (University of Arkansas) in discussing the history of the Ozarks to try and see how Ozarkers have engaged in meaning-making in this place and the nation over time.\nIn this session\, Jared will discuss\n*How we became “hillbillies”*The folklorists and storytellers that defined us*Ozarkers in the 21st Century\nJared Phillips is a writer and farmer with deep roots in the Arkansas hill country. He and his wife farm above the Muddy Fork of the Illinois River\, relying on draft horses for their farm work. In addition to farming and writing\, he’s a historian at the University of Arkansas where he teaches on Ozark and rural history and is the author of Hipbillies: Deep Revolution in the Arkansas Ozarks. He is currently finishing work on Harvesting Hope: How Organic Farming Tried to Save the Ozarks\, a history of the Ozark Organic Growers Association and the development of the USDA Organic program. In addition to his academic work\, other writing can be found in Gravy\, Farming Magazine\, Front Porch Republic\, Skipjack Review\, and more.

SUMMARY:Eugene Onegin: A Bluegrass Musical
DESCRIPTION:MUSIC\, BOOK\, AND LYRICS BY SARAH GANCHER\nDIRECTED BY RACHEL CHAVKIN\nWORLD PREMIERE\nDEVELOPED AT THE 2024 ARKANSAS NEW PLAY FESTIVAL\nJune 10 – June 28\, 2026\nEugene Onegin—A Bluegrass Musical by Sarah Gancher (creator of the Obie Award-winning Russian Troll Farm) is a potent mix of original bluegrass and country\, barbeque\, and feverish young love. Pushkin’s novel and Tchaikovsky’s opera have been completely reimagined\, now set in 1940s rural Arkansas\, where a girl who dreams of writing songs falls for a dangerously magnetic—but jaded—touring musician.
