Open to students ages 11+, any instrument or voice type. Campers will play in a large ensemble as well as in small groups organized by age and ability, learning songs, style, and improvisation by ear. Students will also learn recording techniques, composition/arranging, practice strategies, and historical and social context. At camp, you will experience a fun group dynamic where you are free to express yourself through improvisation, interaction, and composition. You will leave ready to impress friends with your knowledge of this genre and excited to learn more tunes from the jazz repertoire. Your appreciation for this Black American art form will grow as you learn based on the historically-informed aural tradition, and cultural context will be given for every song learned. We have two learning options for you this year! Join us in-person or via a live stream. If you are joining us in-person, we are working hard to ensure you have a safe experience following CDC guidelines. If you are joining us virtually, you will have a synchronous virtual learning experience with your learning community. You will be arranged in small groups based on instrumentation and experience level.
