At the Tip of a Top: Working with Poetic Turns
In this workshop we will explore how a variety of poets intentionally use specific parts of speech, syntax, line breaks and punctuation to craft surprising turns that keep readers engaged and involved, both in the act of reading, and also in the process of making meaning and creating connections. We will address questions like, ‘How do we maintain unity in our poems as we take leaps and form associations?’ ‘What is the structure of a poem and how does it work?’ After looking at–and briefly discussing– concrete examples, we will put into practice what we learned and generate new work. Come prepared to play and get messy.
**
Recommended for participants 16 years and above.
ACCESS NOTES: The workshop will take place virtually via Zoom with Zoom auto captions. An ASL interpreter will be present. Access copies of workshop materials will be made available via Google Docs.
Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) service will be provided with advance request. To ensure that we have enough time to book and allow captioners to prepare, please reach out to the Open Mouth team through Eventbrite or via email at openmouthreadings@gmail.com by December 26th to request CART service.
