Sand Casting

Event Details

This class will introduce students to sand casting, in a miniature bench top setting! Sand casting is usually considered an industrial technique of metal casting, but it can actually be quite accessible and fun for artists. Although it is not as refined as lost wax (investment) casting, sand casting has the major advantage of being fast and cheap with all materials being recycled and no waiting time for making the molds. Each student will make small castings out of aluminum and bronze. We will cover some basics of pattern making and what makes a good pattern, and we will experiment with carving molds directly in the sand. At the end of the class, students will have the understanding and a list of where to get materials and tools to set up their own small (or not so small) sand foundry.

* Masks will be required while in the building.
