This fall, prepare to be captivated by the inaugural KaniniFest! This groundbreaking one-act play festival promises three extraordinary days of immersive performances, exhilarating dance workshops, enchanting drum circles, captivating art installations, and so much more.
Derived from the Indigenous Australian word Kanyini, meaning “oneness,” KaniniFest embodies the profound concept of love, the direct connection to your land, your spirit, your soul, and an undying responsibility and caring. Created by the visionary actors and artists Christopher Alexander Chukwueke and Tenisi Davis, who currently serve as artists-in-residence at the Momentary under the banner of Moja Productions, this festival is a remarkable program tailored specifically for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) playwrights from across the nation. KaniniFest aims to provide a world-class platform for undiscovered, underserved, or up-and-coming BIPOC playwrights.
The festival showcases five exceptional BIPOC playwrights, each presenting their unique one-act plays. While the playwrights hail from various corners of the United States, all directors and actors performing in the festival are talented individuals from the vibrant Northwest Arkansas region.

This film offers an intimate portrait of three women who return home from prison and rebuild their lives after being separated from their children for years.
In partnership with the University of Arkansas, the Fayetteville Public Library presents a screening of the film Apart.
Since the beginning of the War on Drugs, the number of women in U.S. prisons has increased over 800%. The majority are mothers. Against the backdrop of a Midwestern state battling industrial decline and an opioid epidemic, Apart, directed by Jennifer Redfearn, offers an intimate portrait of three women incarcerated on drug-related charges who face the challenge of mothering their children first from prison and then after release. With the help of a unique re-entry program run by Malika Kidd, an advocate formerly incarcerated in the same prison, the women lean on each other to find the strength and support to rebuild their lives and relationships with their children.
After the film, Malika Kidd will speak to the audience via Zoom.

This year we received promotional support from Arkansas Tourism. A quote to us from Dalaney Thomas, Director Division of Tourism, Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism: “Arkansas Tourism is happy to be a promotional partner this year as it aligns with our music initiative and you’ve demonstrated a thoughtful and strategic marketing plan.“
Along with the incredible local, diverse and regional talent we have confirmation of attendance from two GRAMMY nominated artists, the legendary Bluesman, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes the proprietor of the oldest operational juke joint in America – the Blue Front Café, founded in 1948, and multi-instrumentalist, Hubby Jenkins, known as a former member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and the Rhiannon Giddens Band. People won’t want to miss Arkansas’ own “Miss Essie, The Blues Lady”!
In addition to the musical performances and workshops, we will host educational presentations in partnerships with the University of Arkansas, Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, Turnbo Park, and other local partners and coordinate instrument workshops with our artists for attendees. “Midnight Special”, a multi-media presentation highlighting the music, influence and impact of the great, Lead Belly, will be held. The majority of the festival will be free and open to the public, with the exception of our “Not Your Momma’s Gospel Brunch”, on Sunday October 27, 2024.
