Cinema of the Ozarks

Location: Bentonville
Organization Type: Media, Film & Digital Arts
Mission: About Cinema of the Ozarks
Cinema of the Ozarks (CinemaOZK) is a nonprofit arts and culture organization devoted to bringing rich, diverse film experiences to Northwest Arkansas (and beyond). Their mission is to “enhance the arts culture environment of Northwest Arkansas” by providing a venue — and a cultural space — for quality films often overlooked by mainstream, commercial theaters. Their programming emphasizes independent films, foreign films, documentaries, repertory cinema and other “thought-provoking” movies that chain theaters don’t usually show

CinemaOZK also aims to foster a deeper film culture — not just by showing films, but by offering opportunities for film education and community-building: they plan film discussion events and educational programming for both children and adults.

About

History & Origins
CinemaOZK was founded to meet a clear need: there were no dedicated arthouse or art-house style movie theaters within 100 miles of Northwest Arkansas.

The organization launched by hosting “pop-up” screening events rather than opening in a permanent theater building — intending to build community interest, test programming models, and raise funds toward eventually establishing a permanent, year-round art-house cinema.

Their first film-screening event — a collaboration featuring a live musical score by a band performing alongside the screening of the 1929 experimental documentary Man With a Movie Camera — was scheduled for April 16 (year not specified in the summary) at the Arkansas Public Theatre in Rogers. This kind of event underscores their commitment to creative, historically conscious, and socially aware cinema programming.

CinemaOZK is structured as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization — enabling donors and supporters to make tax-deductible contributions to help fund screenings, sponsor events, and support their long-term mission of building a sustainable arthouse film presence in the region.

Core Vision & Impact
CinemaOZK’s vision is to expand access to films that inspire reflection, discussion, and community — films that otherwise might never reach small or mid-sized communities in Northwest Arkansas. By offering a range of programming — from cutting edge new releases to classic or repertory films, indie features to world cinema — they aim to broaden horizons for moviegoers in their region, giving audiences access to cinematic voices and stories that challenge, enlighten, and entertain.

Additionally, by planning educational programs and community events, CinemaOZK positions itself not just as a film-screening service, but as a cultural institution: a platform for film appreciation, arts education, and building local community around shared film experiences.
