Aaron Copland – Symphony No. 3
In memory of Sara Sharp
Part of SoNA’s mission is to uncover music that has been historically and unjustifiably ignored by the classical music world. SoNA is excited to present a pulse-raising performance of Chickasaw Nation composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s Chokfi (Rabbit), which is a musical sketch of the Trickster character in Southeastern Indian folklore, scored for strings and percussion. Solo pianist Angela Cheng joins us for Manuel de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain: a steamy, sultry, summery excursion into three different Spanish scenes, each popping with character, romance, and intrigue. Rounding out this eclectic program is Aaron Copland’s Symphony No. 3, justifiably referred to by those in the know as the American symphony. Written at the end of World War II, its soaring melodies and jaunty rhythms pay homage to all the millions of anonymous men and women who contributed to the war effort – and he fittingly begins the final movement with another of his most famous works, Fanfare for the Common Man. Each of these works is a captivating storytelling of folklore: from traditional Spanish stories, to Chickasaw Nation tales, to classic Americana evocations.

SoNA Singers, a chorus of 60 beautiful voices, will sing powerful poems, and spoken word artists will share poems inspired by the music and poetry of the event. Through this program we celebrate the transcendent ability of the written word, as well as the ability of music to transcend words by providing color, context, and emotion. About SoNA Beyond:
SoNA Beyond showcases the vast spectrum of possibilities for classical music to reach audiences in new and innovative ways. SoNA Beyond presents a variety of concerts, programs, and other creative arts experiences that go beyond the symphony’s annual mainstage season of concerts. The new series features symphony musicians in creative ways, including chamber music performances, outdoor educational concerts, community partnerships, groundbreaking contemporary experiences, and more. SoNA Beyond rethinks the boundaries of what a symphony can do to innovate the artform, include new voices, and immerse SoNA in the Northwest Arkansas community – to give audiences an expansive view of what classical music is and who it serves.
