Exquisite CreaturesΒ is a dialogue with art, nature, and science that asks the question: what is it about the natural world that calls to us? Throughout the exhibition, artist and naturalist Christopher Marley reflects on humanityβs intimate relationship with nature, revealing its intricate beauty and diversity through three-dimensional works comprised of animal, mineral, and plant specimens arranged in precise, geometric compositions. Shown together, the works create an immersive environment which inspires wonder and fosters a desire to preserve the natural world.
Crystal Bridges welcomes guests to experience the connection between art, nature, and science, emotionally and aesthetically, throughout the exhibition. The museum will activate the showβs themes through nature and science-based programming and activities both inside the museum and outdoors across its trails and grounds.

A Soldierβs Journey is a study for a monumental bronze by Sabin Howard. In 2024, the finished piece measuring 58 feet wide will be the centerpiece, completing the new World War I Monument in Washington, DC.
University of Arkansas graduate Joe Weishaar won the World War I Monument design competition when he was just 25 years old. His concept, βThe Weight of Sacrifice,β incorporates two sculptures, landscape elements, and a reflecting pool.
See a preview of the new World War I memorial!
Many American artists documented their experience of World War I, participating as soldiers, relief workers, and official war artists. More than 100 years later, Howard uses art to convey the courage and sacrifice of American soldiers and the horrors of war.

The work presents a breadth of environmental details that define the Utah landscapeβs high desert, prairie, mountain ranges, and salt flats to expand our environmental understanding of how diverse the US South is as a region broader than the southeast.

Oluwatobi Adewumi Exhibit Opening at SAAC
The South Arkansas Arts Center welcomes contemporary artist Oluwatobi Adewumi and his exhibition “Journey to the Unknown” to the Merkle and Price Galleries April 29 β June 12. Adewumi is originally from Nigeria but now calls south Arkansas his home. There will be an artist’s reception on Thursday, May 2 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm
Adewumi focuses on the sociocultural aspect of the subject through his multimedia drawings. His work explores his personal journey of having been born in Nigeria and then moving and assimilating into American Culture in conservative Arkansas.
His drawings are between realism/abstract figures and portraits layered out to make it simple for his audience by telling a story in a story. Some of his best tools are charcoal, and acrylic paint, which he can manipulate and use freely to bring the depth of the subject as he tackles the story behind each piece.
βThe exhibition narrates my experience as a black man in the US or as a black man in an arduous society. From the lens of an immigrant, my art frames new stories about an epic experience that has been playing like a film for the past five hundred years. The stories remind us that we are one people who must live together and learn about love and harmony, despite the differences in the colors of our skins,β said Adewumi.
When Adewumi first migrated to America, he never considered himself βblackβ since he came from a country where the idea of skin color was never reflective of his identity. In Nigeria, ethnicity, religion, social class, and gender defines who a person is in society. To be called black had never been part of the conversation, since the social construct in Nigeria was not based on race. He would travel to any part of the country without worrying that someone was going to judge him or not afford him the imperative opportunity based on his skin color.
When he migrated to America, he realized that his race and his ethnicity as an African immigrant would define the space that society afforded him. Adewumi and his wife, an Arkansas native, live in McNeil located just outside of Magnolia.
For more information on the Oluwatobi Adewumi exhibit at the South Arkansas Arts Center, please call the SAAC office at 870-862-5474 or visit the website at www.saac-arts.org. SAAC is located at 110 East Fifth Street, El Dorado, Arkansas.

In Dark Waters, a tour de force of Southern Gothic Noir, Kristine Potter reinvents a centuries-old genre with coolness and clarity. With this recent collection of seductive and darkly brooding photographs, Potter reflects on the Southern Gothic mythos found in the popular imagination of βmurder balladsββtraditional songs from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that often end in death and despair.
Her richly detailed black-and-white images channel the setting and characters of these songs, capturing the landscape of the American South and creating portraits that stand in for the oft-unnamed women at the center of their stories. In doing so, she both evokes and exorcizes the ambient sense of threat that women often grapple with as they move through the world.

Free, no tickets required.

Encompassing photography, film, painting, sculpture, and installation, Awol Erizkuβs work references and re-imagines African American and African visual culture, from hip-hop vernacular to iconic symbols from across history, including the Pan-African flag and the image of Nefertiti. Erizkuβs vision is expansive, drawing on traditions of spirituality, Surrealism, and Conceptualism to create uniquely powerful art.
Mystic Parallax is the first major monograph (co-published by the Momentary and Aperture) and exhibition by this rising interdisciplinary artist. It blends his studio practice with work made as an in-demand editorial photographer, and features his conceptual portraits of leading Black cultural figures, such as Amanda Gorman, Michael B. Jordan, Pharrell Williams, and Solange. As Erizku has said, βItβs important for me to create confident, powerful, downright regal images of Black people.β
Free, no tickets required.
